Why the Last Task Follows You into the Next One
You finish the call, close the tab, and open the document you have been meaning to write. Ten minutes later there is one line on the page. Nothing interrupted you, nobody came over, the room is quiet. The call is simply still running somewhere at the back of your head, taking up the room the writing needed.
Sophie Leroy gave this a name in 2009, in a paper for Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes with the very honest title, Why is it so hard to do my work? She called it attention residue. When you move from one task to another, a part of your attention stays behind on the first one, and the new task gets whatever is left over. In her experiments people did measurably worse on the second task when the first had been cut short.
The thing that decides how much residue you carry is not how long the last task took. It is how finished it felt. A job you closed off cleanly tends to stay closed. A job you abandoned mid sentence keeps putting its hand up. Leroy and Theresa Glomb followed this up in Organization Science in 2018 and found the effect was strongest when people expected to return to the interrupted work under time pressure. Knowing that something unresolved is waiting, and waiting in a hurry, is enough to keep part of you standing in the old room.
The useful part of that same paper is the fix, and it is smaller than you would expect. Before switching, people wrote a brief note of where they had got to and what they meant to do next. Leroy and Glomb call it a ready to resume plan. Those who wrote one carried less residue into the next task and performed better on it than those who simply moved on. It takes well under a minute, and it seems to work because it answers the question your head keeps quietly asking, which is what happens to the thing we just dropped.
It is worth knowing how often this is happening to you. Gloria Mark, at the University of California, Irvine, has been measuring how people actually use their screens for close to two decades. In 2004 the average stretch of attention on any one screen was around two and a half minutes. By 2012 it was 75 seconds. Across recent years it has settled at about 47 seconds, with a median of 40. Her earlier work on interrupted work, presented at the CHI conference in 2008, put the time to get back to an interrupted task at around 23 minutes. Most days are not one long focus problem. They are a few hundred small handovers.
Sound will not clear the residue. Only closing the loop does that, on paper or in your head. What steady sound can do is make the handover less porous. Give yourself two or three minutes between the call and the writing, put something unchanging on, rain, a stream, a fire, a low room hum, and let the last thing settle rather than following you in. An empty room has a way of filling with whatever you just left. Rachel Buxton and colleagues, writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2021, pulled together eighteen studies on natural sound and found consistent effects on stress and mood, with water strongest for mood. It is not a cure for a fragmented afternoon, but it is a better thing to hand the gap to than the inbox.
So, three small habits, in the order they help. Write the one line note before you switch, not after. Give the switch a minute of its own rather than none at all. Keep whatever is playing dull on purpose, so it holds the gap without becoming the next thing you pay attention to. None of this makes a day with no gaps in it feel whole. It does mean the next hour starts with more of you in it.
