What a Ticking Clock Does to Your Concentration
You probably have not moved the clock. What has changed is the room around it. The windows are shut again, the fan is off, the street is quieter after eight, and the general hum that covered everything through the summer has gone. So in the middle of September a clock that has ticked in the same spot for years suddenly seems to have got louder, and you find yourself either leaning on it or wanting to take the battery out. Both reactions are common, and they are not really about the volume.
A tick is doing two jobs at once, and they pull in opposite directions. It is a rhythm, steady and predictable, which is the kind of sound the brain stops attending to quickly. It is also a running count of time leaving the room. Whether a clock settles you or winds you up mostly depends on which of those two things you are hearing on a given afternoon, and that tends to be set by what you are trying to do rather than by the clock.
Take the rhythm first, because it is the half people are most confident about and the half with the least behind it. The reasonable claim is that a regular sound gives the ear something dull to sit on, so a door closing or a car outside is less of an interruption than it would be in a silent room. That is plain masking, and it is real enough. The bigger claim, that a steady beat itself sharpens attention, is thinner than it gets repeated. Studies on rhythmic sound and attention do find effects on timing and on how the brain locks on to a predictable signal, but the results vary a lot with tempo and task, and reviews of the area keep landing on inconclusive rather than yes. If a tick helps you, it is most likely covering something, not tuning you.
The other half is better evidenced, and it is the awkward one. Thomas Hunt and Kaljit Sandhu, writing in the International Journal of Educational Research in 2017, had eighty adults do mental arithmetic under two kinds of time pressure. One was a time limit. The other was simply a clock in the room. The clock alone was enough to change performance, and the people it made worse were the ones who were not anxious about maths to begin with. A visible, audible reminder that time is passing is not neutral background. It is a second task running quietly alongside the first.
That matters more for some work than others. Teresa Amabile and her colleagues, writing in Harvard Business Review in 2002, tracked daily diaries from workers across a set of project teams and found that on high time pressure days people were less likely to have a creative thought, and that the dip carried into the two days after. Pressure did not make them lazy. They worked more, and they often felt busy and energised. It made them narrow. That is a good trade when you are clearing forty small things off a list, and a bad one when you are trying to find the shape of something you have not written yet.
So the useful question is not whether a ticking clock is good or bad. It is what you want from the next hour. If the job is admin, replies, tidying, anything with an obvious finish line, a tick is a fair companion. It gives the hour a pulse and a slight forward lean, and that is often exactly the nudge a dull task needs. If the job is thinking, drafting, reading properly, or sitting with a problem that does not yet have edges, the same sound is quietly asking you to hurry, and you will feel it as restlessness rather than as pressure.
When you want the cover without the countdown, the answer is a sound with no finish line in it. Rainfall, a stream, birdsong, waves. There is decent evidence that this kind of sound earns its place. A synthesis by Rachel Buxton and colleagues in PNAS in 2021, pulling together eighteen studies, found natural sounds were associated with lower stress and annoyance and with better mood and cognitive performance. It is a body of small studies rather than one definitive trial, and the effects are modest, but it points the same way consistently, which is more than most background noise advice can say.
None of this is a rule you should apply to yourself against the evidence of your own afternoon. Some people genuinely work better to a tick and always have. Others cannot hear one without counting it. The only way to know which you are is to try the same task twice, once with clocks in your mix and once with rainfall over a forest, and notice which hour you came out of feeling like you had got somewhere. It takes two afternoons and it settles a question people otherwise argue about for years.
